We are deeply offended by the television attack advertisements now running against Attorney General candidate Bob Ferguson. These advertisements attack Bob’s work as a law student summer intern to protect the right under the United States Constitution’s Sixth Amendment that ensures all citizens have the right to an attorney to represent them in criminal cases.
The Sixth Amendment of the United States Constitution provides that “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to … have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.” Bob Ferguson, and the many public safety organizations, legal professionals, and individuals who endorse him, understand and support this Constitutional protection. In contrast, Reagan Dunn described these ads as “fair.” He said that Bob’s work protecting this Constitutional right “shows bad judgment.” In our view, Mr. Dunn is taking a dangerous and irresponsible position for someone who wants to be our State’s attorney—a job which requires the enforcement of all constitutional protections for all Washingtonians. Disregarding the protections afforded by our Constitution for personal political gain is a dishonorable path to the Attorney General’s office. We denounce these political advertisements. We call upon Reagan Dunn to denounce these ads by the Republican State Leadership Committee and that he ask that they be taken down immediately. |
